Choosing RDP specs for forex trading

How much CPU and memory your terminals and expert advisors really need.

The short answer

For one or two MetaTrader terminals with a handful of charts, a 2 vCPU server with 4 GB of memory is enough. For several terminals or heavy expert advisors, start at 4 vCPUs and 8 GB.

What uses resources

Each terminal runs its own process. Charts, indicators and expert advisors add CPU load, and every open chart uses memory. Back-testing is the heaviest job, so run it on a larger size or on a separate server.

Location matters more than power

Network distance to your broker's trading server affects latency more than extra CPU does. Ask your broker where its servers are and pick the nearest city.

Keep it stable

Use a strong password, update Windows on a schedule you control, and avoid installing software you do not need. A server that restarts for an update in the middle of a trading day is a risk. Schedule updates for quiet hours.

A note on risk

A server keeps your software online. It does not change how a strategy performs, and trading carries risk of loss.
